The Living Tradition: Cultural Organising

Read our toolkit here.

In most contexts where people are organising together, workers (or tenants, community members, whoever you are organising with) are from a range of backgrounds, nationalities, and traditions.

This is a significant source of strength to organisations, and one which is rarely engaged with as it deserves. Instead, North American organising traditions tend to be understood as the standard form, at least in UK organising contexts, and therefore the whole force of understanding and activity that is available to the organisation is jettisoned.

This report introduces an organising technique that helps groups engage with the organising cultures already present within them. The approach uses exercises integrated into the everyday practices of organising to reveal the stories, symbols, and memories that participants bring with them - and make them into strong tools. Over time, this transforms group dynamics and builds strong organisations.
