You Make the Way as You Go:
Making Pedagogical Organisations

Read the toolkit here.

This is a short guide for people who want to organise communities or workplaces with principles of education at the heart of what they do.

It is based on practical experience with organising and learning together, and offers exercises used in real campaigns to help groups identify challenges, set priorities, reflect on leadership, and learn while taking action.

It focuses on helping the group develop the ability to think independently, decide what matters, and build something sustainable. These methods don’t require a lot of time or resources — what’s needed is a commitment to learning as you go and making sure everyone has space to participate.

Too often, organising depends on a small number of people doing the thinking while others follow instructions. That approach rarely lasts. When those few become overwhelmed, leave, or hit obstacles, the whole effort can falter. Groups that haven’t learned to reflect and act together struggle to adapt when circumstances change. This guide aims to build collective capacity so the group can carry itself forward over a long period of time.
